School Profile

Kings Canyon is a comprehensive two year public middle school  The school was founded in 1959 and lies in the south east part of the greater Fresno community.  There are five elementary schools that feed into KC.  Our regional high school is Sunnyside HS home of the Wildcats. Neighboring colleges Fresno Pacific and California State University Fresno are both less than 10 miles away.

Kings Canyon MS has approximately 950 students with equal percentages being male and female.   Approximately 56% of our students are classified as English Learners.

Over the past seven years, test scores have improved dramatically while absenteeism and suspension have decreased.  In 2014 Kings Canyon was given national recognition as a School to Watch.   This prestigious award was re-designated this year and the award extended to the 2020 school year.  KC is the only school in Fresno Unified to receive this distinction among the other 18 middle schools in FUSD. Being a STW means the programs and growth of our students are such that other middle schools can benefit from duplicating.   Kings Canyon was also awarded the Bonner Character Education Award in recognition of campus environment and community service.  Kings Canyon has also been a Nationally-certified AVID School for eight consecutive years. And in 2014 year we were one of only three middle schools in Fresno Unified to be awarded as a CORE High Performing School, given the task of mentoring other schools in our region and state as we traveled for three years to Oakland Unified to help underperforming schools.

Students at this school prepare for high school, college and beyond by participating in rigorous and challenging curriculum that includes Algebra, Spanish, Robotics, Bio-med Junior Doctor's Academy, AVID and Pre-Advanced Placement courses in English and History.  We are preparing our students to become leaders of tomorrow in our community.

It is our belief that another element to keeping students in school and doing well is to engage them in sports, clubs and the arts.  This year we have added five music classes along with drafting and video production.  In sports we have grown our football program to include a JV team, and are one of only a handful of schools to do so.  We brought home the championship in volleyball and look to increase the participation of all sports.  Simply put we want to keep kids in the classrooms and on the field.  In this way we will meet our goal of creating career and college ready students.

Clubs and activities are an everyday occurrence at KCMS students participate in folkloric dance, sewing, Battle of the Books, Construction Club, American-Asian Club, Animi Club, Wyldlife – faith based club, Art Club, 3D printing club, ….etc
