Addicott Elementary School will host its first Special Olympics Field Day Event, giving their students an opportunity to display the basic sports skills they have been working on. The event is part of Young Athletes, a new Special Olympics program that encourages students with and without intellectual disabilities to work on skills like running, kicking and throwing to help them learn the importance of exercise and to have fun with sports.

In attendance will be Fresno Unified’s Board of Education Trustee Veva Islas, as well as special guests from the Fresno Police Department, Fresno Fire Department and Fresno County’s Sheriff’s Department.

“It’s a joy for our students to experience the thrill of sports, with their families there to cheer them on. The inclusivity of Special Olympics helps us live out our district mission of nurturing and cultivating the interests, intellect and leadership of our students by providing an excellent, equitable education in a culturally proficient environment,” said Superintendent Bob Nelson.
