Sunset Elementary School will unveil a mural on the front wall of its multi-purpose room that celebrates bilingualism, multiculturalism and diversity, depicting various career pathways and the importance of speaking two languages. The mural also includes Deputy Superintendent Misty Her and other district staff members who have supported Sunset’s dual language immersion program through the years.

Sunset was the first dual language immersion school in the district. The district now has 21 schools throughout the district that offer Spanish or Hmong language programs. Dual language immersion teaches students to read, write and speak in two languages. Blue Shield of California is donating the $16,000 to pay for the cost of the mural. The mural was painted by local artist Jose Elias.

“I am honored to be included in Sunset Elementary’s mural celebrating multiculturalism. This is a topic that I am passionate about, and I am extremely proud of what our district has accomplished through dual language programs and a variety of other avenues,” Deputy Superintendent Her said.
