Superintendent Board Remarks from August 8, 2018

Superintendent Bob Nelson provided a brief report to the Fresno Unified Board of Education including:

• Highlighting the immense work done this summer to support students over the break from summer learning to free meals to preparing for the new school year. Superintendent shared a short summer video recap.

• Superintendent congratulated 119 summer school graduates, 92 of which walked across the gradation stage in a special ceremony on July 13 at the Audra McDonald Theater at Roosevelt High School

• As school starts Monday, August 13 Nelson shared a public service announcement (PSA) currently running on local television stations to remind the public about student safety as students head back to school

• Superintendent spoke about today’s district-wide Active Assailant Training thanking facilitators from the Fresno County Sherriff’s Department who led staff through Run Hide Fight preparation. He shared that district posters reflecting Run Hide Fight were on their way to school sites and district offices to serve as reminders to parents and staff of this initiative.

Williams Teachers Hit the Streets to Engage Families

Williams Elementary School teachers headed out on August 6 into their neighborhood to begin building personal connections with families.  Staff personally invited families to a number of back to school events including kindergarten orientation, family/staff barbecue and Back to School Night.

Target Hosts Shopping Spree for 100 Birney Students

Target hosted a back-to-school shopping spree for 100 selected students from Birney Elementary School on August 4. Thanks to the generosity of Target, students each had $100 to spend on school supplies and clothes at the Shields Avenue and First Street store.

Sunnyside Teacher is Quarterfinalist for Music Award

Sunnyside High School music teacher Wendy Shrestha has been selected as a quarterfinalist for the 2019 GRAMMY Music Educator Award™.  She was among nominees from 171 cities, ranging from elementary general music teachers to band directors, choral conductors, string teachers, and college professors. The GRAMMY Music Educator Award was established to “recognize current educators (kindergarten through college, public and private schools) who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. A joint partnership and presentation of the Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum, the recipient will be recognized during GRAMMY® Week 2019.”

Semi-finalists will be announced in September.​ The 2019 recipient will also be flown to Los Angeles to attend the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards® ceremony and other GRAMMY Week events. The nine additional finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium, and the schools of all 10 finalists will receive matching grants. The matching grants provided to the schools are made possible by the generosity and support of the GRAMMY Museum’s Education Champion Ford Motor Company Fund. ​  

District Hires New Public Information Officer

Fresno Unified has hired Vanessa Ramirez as the district’s new public information officer. Ms. Ramirez comes to Fresno Unified from Telemundo where she served as an anchor. She has an extensive media background and a comprehensive understanding of communication needs. Ms. Ramirez is an Emmy award winner and also placed second in the Fresno County Farm Bureau’s Annual Ag Awards. Ms. Ramirez replaces Jessica Baird, who moved out of state with her family.
