Local artist Jason Esquivel has created a mural of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the east wall of King Elementary School. District and school leaders will unveil the mural during a small ceremony. Speakers will include Superintendent Bob Nelson and board president Keshia Thomas.

King’s first grade team suggested a mural during discussion between new principal Summer Gaston-Gehris and her staff on creating a welcoming environment and vision for the school. Esquivel, who has completed various murals and projects throughout the state, wanted to create a mural that would be uplifting and positive. He donated the mural to King Elementary for the entire city to enjoy.

“I welcome this new mural honoring Dr. King, especially at a time when we as a community, state and nation are struggling with questions of equity and race. I love that the artist, who is a Fresno native, created this beautiful piece to give hope to our city,” said Superintendent Bob Nelson.

Representatives of the media attending are asked to wear face masks and practice social distancing.
