To combat disruptions to the classroom as a result of an ongoing shortage of substitute teachers, Fresno Unified, through a side letter agreement with FASTA, will provide an additional $200 stipend for substitutes who teach 20 consecutive days. The stipend will be available in the 21/22 school year for full day assignments for each stretch of 20 days up to $1,260. The stipend will be available to substitutes who are part of the Fresno Area Substitute Teachers Association (FASTA).

The district has also reached another side letter agreement with FASTA to provide an additional $100 to subs working on Nov. 12, the day following the Veterans Day holiday. The district is anticipating a significant number of teacher absences on that day.

As part of its substitute teacher recruiting efforts, Fresno Unified in September raised the daily substitute pay to $208.04. This includes the base rate of $163.04 a day and an additional $45 a day to be prepared for simultaneous teaching.

“We are happy to offer these two additional incentives to our substitute teachers. We know that having our substitute teachers commit to teaching consecutive days at our schools goes a long way towards consistency and stability for our students,” said Superintendent Bob Nelson.
