In celebration of Dia del Maestro (Day of the Teacher), the district will celebrate its more than 150 dual language immersion (DLI) teachers in pre-kindergarten through high school. DLI teachers and their guests will be welcomed with mariachi performances and baile folklorico groups from McLane High School. Special recognition will be given to Patricia Wolf Kincade, a district administrator who has been a key proponent in expanding dual language immersion education in FUSD.

The Dual Language Immersion Program in Fresno Unified has grown to 13 elementary sites, one middle school and one high school. The newest dual immersion campus, Juan Felipe Herrera Elementary School, will open for the 2022-23 school year.

“Through the tremendous work our dual language immersion teachers, our students learn not only to be proficient in two languages, but to excel academically in two languages. The program has helped increase our students’ self-esteem, cultural awareness and sensitivity, and contributed to our mission as a district to provide an excellent and equitable education in a culturally proficient environment,” said Superintendent Bob Nelson.
