Student Support Services provides a wide array of Social Emotional Support to students and families in removing barriers that lead to academic achievement and success. 

Our Mission

Providing culturally sensitive, holistic, and multi-tiered assessments and interventions which engage students, families and the school community to achieve academic and social-emotional success.

Social Emotional Support Specialists (SESS)

Social Emotional Support Specialists (SESS) are assigned to twelve comprehensive middle schools:


They provide a variety of social work services to students and families supporting students' academic and social success.  SESS' functions as part of a multidisciplinary team in addressing concerns presented in the school setting.  The team may include administrators, school psychologist, school nurse, counselor, teacher, and other school personnel.  Professional services provided include:

  • Counseling Services (Individual/Group)
  • Case Management
  • Follow-up on student concerns referred by school personnel
  • Develop/facilitate/coordinate prevention activities and intervention strategies
  • Collaborate with school personnel to assess students' social/emotional obstacles to academic success
  • Assist families in understanding school policies, services, and programs
  • Provide crisis intervention
  • Link students and families with school and community resources
  • Complete home visits/meet families to understand and address barriers to learning

Social Emotional Support Specialists Address:

  • Family/Home Concerns
  • Behaviors concerns

Social Emotional Support Specialists Help Students:

  • Remove Barriers that might make learning difficult
  • Handle feelings in a positive way
  • Make healthy choices

  • Resolve conflicts
  • Build self-esteem
  • Establish healthy relationships
  • Learn about themselves
  • Be more successful in school
  • Improve attendance
  • Increase academic performance
  • Access community resources
  • Remain in school and graduate

Social Emotional Support Specialists Help Families:

  • Participate in their children's education
  • Facilitate engagement and communication between the family, school and community
  • Identify social factors which may inhibit learning
  • Meet the social and emotional needs of their children

Restoring the Learning Environment Counselors (RLE)

RLE Counselors provide specialized cultural prevention and intervention services to the Southeast population that include:

  • Individual Counseling
  • Crisis and Consultation
  • Case Management
  • Academic Enhancement
  • Parental Support
  • Community Support Development
  • Staff Development
  • Facilitate and Supervise student based advisory committees
  • Community Education and Outreach Services

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services

Fresno Unified School District contracts and partners with community agencies in providing mental health services and referrals to substance abuse services. Please contact the school site to inquire of these programs and services.
