While experiencing overall increases in student graduation rates, Advanced Placement course enrollment, and the number of college and university applications completed, Fresno Unified School District recognized that our African American students were not experiencing these positive trends at the same rate. Having made these observations, Fresno Unified School District identified an underlying need to accelerate its efforts and invest further in this aggressive effort to to justly serve African American students.
The African American Academic Acceleration Initiative (A4) is dedicated to
addressing the fundamental causes for the discrepancy in academic outcomes between African American students and other subgroups of the student population within FUSD.
The A4 Initiative exists to:
Ensure African American students will excel in reading, writing and math
Achieve for our African American students
Create data-informed academic programs
Identify opportunities for academic supports for educators and administrators
Provide access to academic-advancing tools and experiences for students
Develop focused strategies to engage students and parents to become self-advocates
Identify effective practices from practitioners and leaders from other districts who focus on African American academic acceleration and have succeeded in closing the achievement gap
Become leaders and a model for other districts in this state and across the country
A4 aims to achieve the following goals in collaboration with Fresno Unified School District and district-wide school sites for our African American students:
