Inter District Transfer Details (Between Districts)

The parent/guardians of a school-age child who are residents of another district may request a transfer to Fresno Unified School District. The parents/guardians of a school-age child who are residents in Fresno Unified may request a transfer to another school district. (BP 5116 1 https://www.fresnounified.org/board/board-policies )

Inter-district transfer applications are accepted throughout the year and beginning on April 1^st for the following school year.

Requests to Attend FUSD from Another District

Currently Enrolled in FUSD: If a family moves out of FUSD and would like to continue attending, an inter-district transfer request is required at the time of the address change. The family will need to request an inter-district transfer from their new district of residence.

Enrolled and Non-Enrolled in FUSD: Families may request a school at any time using our “Transfer Request Within FUSD.” On-time applications are received on the first business day of September and due by the first business day of December for the following school year. All on-time applications will be selected from the lottery prior to late applications. (For more information see Lottery Details.) If pulled in the lottery families will then need to request an inter-district transfer from their district of residence.

Once an inter-district transfer is approved, the request is required annually. Requests are available beginning on April 1^st for the following school year.

Requests to Attend Another District

If a family moves into the FUSD boundaries and would like to continue attending their current school, an inter-district transfer request is required at the time of the address change. Once an inter-district transfer is approved, the request is required annually. Requests are available beginning on April 1^st for the following school year.

Timelines

Current School Year: Applications for the current school year are accepted until April 1^st. A final decision will be provided within 30 calendar days from the date the request was received.

Future School Year: Applications for the following school year are available on April 1^st. Future year requests will be processed as soon as possible but no later than 14 calendar days after the school year has started.

Reasons to Approve a Request

There are two mandatory reasons a school district must approve a request to another district:

1. Employment- The parent is employed within the boundaries of the requested district.

a. Provide: Proof of a minimum of 10 hours of employment at an address within the requested district

2. Senior Privilege- Student is entering grades 11 or 12

There are several discretionary reasons a school district may approve a request to another district:

1. Change of Legal Address- Student is attending another district and moved into the FUSD boundaries.

2. Childcare- Childcare provider is located in the requested district’s boundaries.

a. Provide: Childcare verification form with proof of address.

3. Continuing Education- Student currently attends the requested district

4. Impending Move- Student will be moving to the requested district in the immediate future

a. Provide: Written evidence- i.e.: lease agreement, escrow document

5. Siblings- Student has siblings attending requested district

6. Specialty Programs- Special program not available in FUSD

Appeals

A family may appeal a denial within 20 calendar days by providing additional information to the FUSD Transfers Department for review and reconsideration.

If the request remains denied, the family may appeal to the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools (FCSS) within 30 calendar days of the original denial. (559) 265-3000.

A failure of the parent to meet these timelines shall be deemed an abandonment of the request.
