Family Leadership Academy
The Family Leadership Academy provides a series of six workshops designed to empower families with the knowledge and skills needed to actively support their child’s education. The sessions focus on strengthening literacy strategies, understanding student assessments, navigating educational resources, and advocating for student needs, including special education rights. Families also learn how to build stronger communication with educators and access literacy intervention supports. In addition, principals are engaged in the process, fostering collaboration between school leadership, families, and the broader school community.
Workshop 1: Principal Vision, Hopes and Dreams
Creates a space for principals and families to come together and build a shared vision for student success. Principals share their goals for the school, while families participate in interactive activities to express their hopes and dreams for their children
Workshop 2: Advocating for Your Student Success
Helps families get to know Fresno Unified School District by learning how the district and its schools operate, understanding their rights as parents or guardians, and exploring the district’s literacy goals. Families will also learn why early literacy is important and how to advocate and communicate effectively with their child’s school.
Workshop 3: Using Data and School Reports to Support your Student and Influence School Policy
Helps families understand why school data matters and how to use it to support their child’s academic success. Families will explore key tools like i-Ready, ATLAS, and the California Dashboard, and learn how to read and use this data to make informed decisions and advocate effectively.
Workshop 4: Maximizing Parent-Teacher Conferences
Focuses on building strong partnerships between families and teachers to support student success. Families will learn how to understand their child’s progress, strengths, and areas for growth, while also having the opportunity to collaborate with teachers on setting goals and advocating for their child’s needs both at home and at school.
Workshop 5: Building Collaborative Partnerships
Highlights the importance of strong home-school partnerships and the vital role families play in literacy. Families will learn strategies for effective collaboration with schools and explore ways to advocate for their child’s literacy development.
Workshop 6: Effective Communication and Conflict Resolution
Helps families understand what communication is and why it’s important. Families will explore different communication styles, learn how to recognize conflict, and discover how effective communication can support their child’s literacy development.
