Nutrition Services
Overview
The Nutrition Services Department provides meals under the National School Breakfast, National School Lunch, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable, After School Snack, Child and Adult Care Food, and Summer Nutrition Services Programs. Nutrition Services provides students nutritionally sound meals to enhance their ability to learn. 98,000 meals are served daily: 27,000 Breakfasts, 58,000 Lunches, 7,500 Snacks and 5,500 Super Snacks. Additionally, about 222,000 summer meals are served each year, bringing the total to nearly 18 million meals served per year. The meals are provided at 104 sites utilizing 478 full and part-time Nutrition Services employees.
The Nutrition Services Department offers all meals at no charge to all students regardless of income levels, a policy change that reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that all students receive nutritious meals. This practice further supports the district’s efforts to eliminate all barriers to student learning and helps ensure students are not hungry at school while they are trying to learn. The change is the result of the district implementing the Community Eligibility Provision, an option available to schools under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Meal applications are no longer required.
