Drone Legend Curriculum

Main Event

Event Description

Teams of 2 students will program a drone to complete a predetermined mission. The course will be given to coaches before the event for students to pre-program their drones. They must complete the mission and return to the launchpad to finish.

Common Core standards and 4C’s

Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others’ ideas and expressing their ideas clearly and persuasively. Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking.

Programming your Drone

Pilots must program their drones to effectively navigate the course to complete the mission. Teams will have two opportunities to complete the mission.

Students must submit a document outlining their programming iterations. They should include descriptive notes to explain the purpose of their coding.

Course Layout

The course will be laid out in two obstacle courses with teams competing in their course.

Drones will start at a launchpad, a program will be initiated and must run its course finishing back at the starting launch pad.

Missions

Objectives

Teams must complete the objective. Up to 2 points for each objective completed.

Crashes

Each crash will result in a deduction of 1 point. A crash is if the drone bumps into any obstacle.

Programming

Points will be awarded for efficient and effective coding and shall be determined on the complexity. Partially Proficient (1 point), Proficient (2-3 points), and Exemplary (4 points).

Technical Requirement

  • Drones must be programmed by a student.
  • Once the program is initiated, the drone may not be interfered with except to reset in case of a crash.
  • If the drone crashes, the observer may reset the drone.
  • There will be a 5-minute time limit for each flight.
  • Points will be added up at the end of each flight.
  • The drone must start and return to the launch pad to complete the mission.
  • Drones must stay within their course. Points will be deducted if drones leave the mission area or cross into the other teams’ course.

Reward Points

Teams will advance through the tournament bracket to make it to the championship round and win the final match. 1st place will receive 70pts and each subsequent rank will receive 3 fewer points than the prior rank.

Prerequisites

Participants must pass The Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST), complete the first unit of the Drone Legends Curriculum, and have practiced with their coach for a minimum of 6 hours. NO EXCEPTIONS!
