Secondary ELD Instruction

Students in grades 7–12 who are learning English receive support in two ways; Designated ELD and Integrated ELD:

  • Designated ELD

This is explicit language instruction provided in one of two types of classes: ELD Elective Classes and Language Intensive Focus (LIF) English Classes.  Both are designed to help students build their English skills and move through the levels of language proficiency.

  • Integrated ELD

This language support happens in regular subject classes such as English, Math, History, and Science to build English language while learning grade-level content. Teachers use both the English Language Development (ELD) standards and the academic content standards to help students understand the subject and improve their English at the same time.

Newcomer EL Program (0-3 years)

Newcomers at the secondary level receive differentiated and comprehensive services that address their language, literacy, and academic needs.

Our newcomer students are eligible to be enrolled in consecutive English Language Development courses (Beginner, Intermediate, and Early Advanced) for up to three years. This process provides newcomers with designated ELD instruction thereby ensuring specialized language support.

Long-Term EL Program (4+ years)

While all teachers are required to provide their EL students with language support, designated ELD is guaranteed in English Language Intensive Focus (LIF) classrooms and ERWC.

  • English Learners in grades 7-12 receive designated ELD instruction daily in ELA classrooms.
  • English learners with ELPI levels of 2H, 3L, and 3H are guaranteed to receive designated ELD instruction in ELA while students with an ELPI level 1 and 2L receive designated ELD instruction in an Advanced ELD class as their elective.
