Seal of Biliteracy

The California State Seal of Biliteracy is marked by a gold seal affixed to the diploma or transcript and recognizes high school graduates who have achieved a high level of proficiency in one or more language(s) in addition to English.  

Key aspects of the California State Seal of Biliteracy:

Recognition:

It recognizes students who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other language.

Language Proficiency:

Students must demonstrate proficiency in both English and another language through various assessments and coursework.

Implementation:

The program was established in 2012 through Assembly Bill 815. 

Awarding:

The seal is awarded by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and participating school districts.

Benefits:

It can be a valuable asset for students seeking college admission, scholarships, or employment opportunities.
