Overview

Project-based learning (PBL) is an approach to education where students actively explore real-world problems and challenges through projects that involve inquiry, research, and problem-solving. PBL emphasizes the development of skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and content knowledge. Students work in teams to design and carry out projects that address complex questions or issues, often guided by an essential question that serves as the driving force for the project. The essential question is open-ended, thought-provoking, and requires students to draw on multiple sources of information and perspectives to develop a solution or response. PBL also involves a public display of student work, where students present their projects to an audience beyond the classroom, such as parents, community members, or experts in the field. This public display encourages students to take ownership of their work, communicate their ideas effectively, and receive feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders. PBL promotes student engagement and motivation by making learning relevant and meaningful. IdeaFest is coordinated through the department of curriculum and instruction and professional learning. CIPL leverages our existing PL and provides the support, venue, and logistical planning to make the process fluid for our teachers and students. This is the only event of its kind in FUSD that is open to all grade levels and all subject areas. In addition to projects that are being worked on now, there will be additional avenues for expression and reflection on the day of the event. Typically each project/team/school will be allocated a 6’x8′ booth to house their project and interact with the community. We are also inviting district departments to engage with the community at our event; we hope to see you there!

This year we are excited to announce you’ll bring student projects into a real community audience at the Fresno High Flea, a monthly market that spotlights local artists and makers. The date is April 11th 2026 The Fresno High area is a powerful place to do this work: Fresno High, founded in 1889, sits at the heart of a long-standing Fresno story—past, present, and future.

As we lean into America 250—the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026—IdeaFest becomes a student-centered way to explore “who we are” and “how we contribute” right here at home. Student work in civic engagement fits naturally in this frame: student voice, community issues, public storytelling, and constructive solutions—shared with the people who live them.

IdeaFest projects are often rooted in art and poetry, and this venue strengthens that identity. The Flea Market context validates student creativity as meaningful community expression—students can display, perform, and discuss their work alongside local creators, receiving authentic feedback that helps them refine their message and craft.

And with Fresno High so close to the Tower District, students’ projects connect to a neighborhood anchored by the historic Tower Theatre. In short: as an IdeaFest Champion, you’re not just supervising—you’re helping students bring art, poetry, and civic voice, into a living community space that matches the moment and the message.

To make IdeaFest possible within a limited budget—and to align with the district’s emphasis on A-ROI (impact we can measure and learn from)—the registration form for this year will be a bit longer than in years past. The added questions help us plan smarter, document outcomes, and ensure we’re putting resources where they create the greatest student benefit. Please complete the form as early and thoroughly as possible, since booth space as well as funding is extremely limited placements will fill quickly.
