Dress Code
To maintain the learning environment and to protect the health and safety of students, these guidelines for students’ dress and grooming have been developed. This dress code applies to both genders and will strictly be enforced consistently and fairly at school and at school functions.
NO RED, MAROON, OR BURGANDY OF ANY KIND MAY BE WORN. This includes backpacks, shoe strings and stitching.
Any apparel, hairstyle, or cosmetics, even if not specifically mentioned below, which creates a safety concern, draws undue attention to the wearer, tends to detract from the educational process, or includes words, lettering, designs, or pictures depicting sexually suggestive expressions or actions, profanity, obscenity, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or which degrade the integrity of the individual or others will not be tolerated. This includes gang related symbols, gang related colors (the school reserves the right to modify colors during the school year), team logos, holes or tears that reveal the skin, and exposure of the body in sexually suggestive manner.
Examples of prohibited apparel, hairstyle, cosmetic, or dress include but are not limited to the following:
SHIRTS, SWEATERS, SWEATSHIRTS, and JACKETS shall be free of
· Underwear type shirts, tank tops, tube tops, halter-tops, spaghetti strap tops, or any top that exposes the midriff and/or undergarments. Straps must be a minimum of two (2) inches.
· Extended lengths past the fingertips. NO SHIRT MAY HANG BELOW THE FINGERTIPS.
SHORTS, PANTS, SKIRTS, AND DRESSES
· Must fit at the waist and cover undergarments. NO sagging or bagging.
· Must be no more than four (4) inches above the knee.
· Spandex pants, shorts and leggings may be worn as long as outer clothing meets the appropriate length.
· No pajama bottoms may be worn.
HEADWEAR (hats, hoods, etc.)
· Must be removed indoors.
· Caps must be worn with bill facing forward.
SHOES
· Must be worn on campus and at school functions.
· All shoes must have heel straps
· No slippers or house shoes may be worn.
· No steel-toed boots.
HAIR
· No bright or unnatural colors (e.g. red, green, blue, pink, purple etc.)
· No unusual designs - Mohawks or abnormal razor cuts etc.
ACCESSORIES shall be free of
· Attire that may be used as weapons, including but not limited to chains, spikes, studs or any other item deemed inappropriate by administration.
· Sleepwear
· Exotic clothing, extreme make-up, dog tags, or military attire.
· Piercings may only be in the ear.
· Tagging, pictures, writing or graphics depicting sexually suggestive or gang expressions.
· Colors or designs identified by the Fresno Police Department as gang related.
ADMINISTRATION RESERVES THE RIGHT TO MAKE EXCEPTIONS TO THE DRESS CODE POLICY FOR SPECIAL DAYS, EVENTS, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OR MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS AND FURTHER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO MODIFY THE DRESS CODE WHEN DEEMED NECESSARY.
DRESS CODE ENFORCEMENT POLICY
Enforcement is the responsibility of parents/guardians and all staff. The dress code will be distributed in writing through both first day packets and school student handbooks or planners. In addition, the dress code will be thoroughly explained to feeder schools and at orientation. As new students enter Yosemite Middle School, the administration will explain the dress code policy and its enforcement procedures. Whenever a student attends school with inappropriate dress, the classroom teacher will explain the violation and refer the student to the administration.
A. First Violation: Student will be sent to office to call home and get new clothes.
B. Second Violation: Student will be sent to office to call home and get new clothes and will be given one hour after school detention.
C. Subsequent violations will result in suspension.
