All Hidalgo students recently took FUSD GLAS tests in Math and will take Language Arts soon. Our total school math score is 20% higher than last years results and is the largest increase in the District! Please continue to encourage your child to pay attention in class, participate in all activities, and give their best effort every day. You will be getting a report on this very soon. PIQUE Classes
PIQUE is an organization that is helping us train parents in how to help your children do well in school. Classes are held on Wednesdays in both the morning and evening. We need more parents who speak English or Hmong to participate in these classes, as we currently do not have enough for the program. New Hidalgo Homework Initiative: Do You Know About It?
Homework is a very important part of your childs learning. People who analyze education all agree that your child needs to practice what they have learned at least 5 or 6 times before they reach mastery. Mastery means they will be able to remember what they learned and be able to use it in the future. While students practice at school under the direction of their teacher, they still need to practice at home.
We have changed the way homework is done at Hidalgo. This was explained in documents sent home last month. Did you receive them? If not come to the office and we will provide them. This is a very important change in the way we do things at Hidalgo and all parents need to know about it.

Financial Literacy for Grades 5 and 6
Students in grades 5 and 6 are learning about money through the Junior Achievement Organization. Volunteers from the Fresno business community come and teach students Financial Literacy, a program, which shows them where money comes from, and how to make the best use of it. We hope this will help them to better understand where education can take them and motivate them to do their best. We have many students who have the potential to go to college and believe learning about money will help. Thanks to Junior Achievement and their volunteer teachers!

After School Pickup
Students are expected to go one of three places after school dismisses at 2:05 PM. 1) To the After School Program; 2) Home on the bus; or 3) Walk home. Students waiting for parents to pick them up may sit and wait until the rest of the students have gone, then they MUST go into the cafeteria. Any students found in any other location will face disciplinary action, as we are responsible for them. If you need us to help you in some way with this situation, then we need to know. Otherwise, we will expect parents to be here by 2:05 to pick up their children. As we move into the second half of this year, please assist us by encouraging your child to give their best effort every day in school. As students move into grades 4, 5, and 6, they go through changes and begin to develop interests other than school. In today's world, students who grow up without a strong education will face a very hard life. It is very important that parents make sure their children come to school on time, ready to learn, and with the expectation they HAVE to do well in school. Our teachers provide that message every day and need you to help by showing that schoolwork is the student's number one responsibility. With our new homework policy, we are trying to hold all students responsible for having and bringing a homework folder to and from school, and completing assigned work to the best of their ability. We must work together to keep all our students on track to become high school graduates with many options. This can only happen if we constantly tell our children what is expected of them.
