Skills and Competencies 020509

The “5” Skills selected by the work group skills committee should be integrated into the K-12 system with appropriate tracking and evaluation mechanism.

We also talked about the importance of incentivizing (by awards, grades, etc.) students so that they see the relevance of these skills.

Furthermore, development of policy, process and training is necessary for teachers in relation to those “5 skills.”

Business and community engagement is important to supporting teachers/students.

This committee could potentially recommend Saturday school for remediation.

Potentially this committee could recommend that every high school have a Career Center with access to national and local labor market data, and opportunity for students to access their skills/career interests.

(We also talked about leveraging resources for Career Centers where possible, i.e. WIBs_EOC).

Another possible suggestion is implementation of a system-wide Workforce Readiness Certificate.
