Student workstations and Firefox
It was discovered that a student is able to alter the desktop background image via Firefox.  The student logs in as duncan.student, launches Firefox, search for an image, right click and selects set as background.

The image does not appear on the desktop, but rather appears (for about 1 sec) when the user logs in and out of the workstation.  The background image files is saved at C:\Documents and Settings\bullard.student\Application Data\mozilla

In order to remove, we had to delete the image file and then clear all cache settings in Firefox.

SharePoint Development Environment Best PracticesUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
SharePoint Development Environment Best Practices

During an OPS meeting we briefly discussed best practices for SharePoint Developer Environments.  I agreed at that time to do some research.  Here is what I found and my comments:

The http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb428899.aspx link recommends for assembly-based development, i.e. developing components that require installation on the Sharepoint server, that developers host on their development mahcines a virtual machine running Sharepoint Server, Visual Studio and Microsoft Office.  This conforms to the team model of collaborative development controlled through island workspaces.

They also call out an alternative where Visual Studio is executed on the host execution space of the developer PC and SharePoint runs in the guest OS execution space.  This configuration requires Visual Studio Team System Team Client which we do not currently support.

It would seem there is a third option.  That of creating on our enterprise development Hyper-V server, virtual servers running SharePoint server, Visual Studio and Microsoft Office thus leveraging the ISCSI shared storage and dynamically sharing CPU and RAM resources.  Why would we want to do this?  Here are a couple reasons:

1.       Reduce Workstation Costs – Running Sharepoint, Studio and Office in a virtual environment on a personal computer requires at a minimum, 4G RAM and lots of disk space.  When the developer is not developing, these unused resources cannot be utilized by other developers.  Why not use thin workstations to access these virtual development machines?

2.       Standardization - Standardized development platforms – Once a standardized virtual machine image is created it can be easily replicated.

3.       Flexibility – It is easy to move a virtual machine from one server to another as needed

4.       Access - Access anywhere, anytime through terminal services by anyone authorized to do so.

5.       Recovery – Adding the virtual hard drives to the enterprise backup routines protects the development investment from loss.

Repost of 12/04/08 issue
Found out that error code 2 is site specific, when we try to attach workstations to EdCtr, Design Science, or Baird Elementary we receive error code2. Baird Middle works fine. If we join machines that give us error code 2 to another site other than those listed they join fine.

When logging in as site.student to the student domain today the wallpaper is not loading and leaving a blank screen. We have tested on three different computer models and 5 school sites including baird.student, viking.student, cambridge.student, and ericson.student. We also tested staff account and it loads the wallpaper fine.

FUSD-Staff wirelessUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
FUSD-Staff wireless
We have been experiencing problems with Staff domain joined laptops connecting wirelessly.  The problem is that the FUSD-Staff wireless is the preferred network to connect to via the group policy.  At some sites (ex. Academy for New American) the FUSD-Staff has a low signal (1 bar) but the FUSD-WLAN has a strong signal (5 bars).

Because the policy is set to connect to the FUSD-Staff wireless when available, the user is unable to disconnect from the weak FUSD-Staff wireless and connect to the stronger FUSD-WLAN.  This is causing the user to loss network connectivity as the signal drops back and forth between 0 and 1 bar.

Another issue is that when you log in as local Administrator, you are unable to connect wirelessly because the laptop is unable to autenthicate to the FUSD-Staff wireless.  You are also unable to disconnect from the FUSD-Staff and connect to the unsecured FUSD-WLAN.

Any suggestions?  Can we remove the policy that forces a Staff computer to use the FUSD-Staff wireless?

Ken-a-vison overhead camera
Ran into a problem with getting this camera working on a domain joined computer.  After successfully installing the camera driver and application (Applied Vision) from the provided CD, I was unable to get the camera to be recognized by the software.  In checking the Device Manager, the camera had a status of "cannot start device (code 10)".  I tried this on the user's computer and my computer with the same results.

Installed the same camera driver and software on a computer which has not been joined to the STAFF domain and the camera worked normally.

HP 6730b Logging in after joining domain
During 1st boot of laptops straight from western blue domain joining scripts are run and laptops are joined to domain as Fresno High Staff. Renaming and Domain joining complete successfully, but after final login when domain policies are applied unit is no longer able to log into FUSD-WLAN and instead will only login to FUSD-Staff and will not authenticate unless laptop is plugged into network and rebooted.

Staff domain - Unable to install software
Users logged into the STAFF domain are unable to install certain applications.  The ones recently reported are ITunes and Adobe Flash Player.

I have tested this on 2 computers and the same error appear (need administrative permission).

Any ideas aside from giving users administrator rights?

Computers getting "kicked off" domain
We have ran into a problem with computers which were orginally joined to the domain (student or staff) and now they have somehow becomed disjoined.  You are not able to log into the computer with a different username.

Example:
Computer is joined to the STUDENTS domain.  Log in as mclane.student (domain options are visible).

The next day, try to log into the same computer with a different username (edison.student) and the error message we get is "domain is not available" or "unable to connect to the domain".  Connect using wired and wireless.

The only solution to fixing this is to disjoin the STUDENT domain by joining a WORKGROUP; reboot; rejoin STUDENT domain (via script or manually).

This has been occuring on and off for a while but only on a few computers, and I have had the ITS techs just disjoin and rejoin the domain to get the workstation back online.   The problem now is that it seems to have spread because we have a batch of 100 ASUS PC laptop at Forkner which seem to be experiencing this problem. I tested about 8 random laptops and they would not login as forkner.student.  Wireless signal was strong and if logged in as Administrator you could get internet access.

Any suggestion on what is causing this?

Wawona - AR/domain issue
At Wawona MS, we ran into a problem where a teacher on the STAFF domain is unable to run AR management on her computer.  The reason is because the AR server has been recently place on the STUDENTS domain.

Location path to AR data:  \\wa-schoolwide.students.fusd.local\data

When logged in as a teacher on the STAFF domain, you map a drive to the path above and get a "access denied" error.

Any suggestion on how we can get a teacher to access AR management from her workstation?

Staff - join domain script
Can you edit all the staff scripts to remove the following lines in the STAFF-SCHOOL .bat file?

mkdir "%allusersprofile%\documents\BACKUP"
xcopy /s /y /c /h /e "%userprofile%" "%allusersprofile%\documents\BACKUP"

The IT Specialist are copying the profiles manually.  This will greatly speed up the joining process because they will not have to wait for the back files to be created.

HP MiniNotes - Mysite shortcut
On the HP mininotes, the MySite Documents folder shortcut does not work.  When you click on the link, the path can not be found, however the path is correct.

Is there going to be  a new shortcut pushed out all workstations?

Another issues with the MySite Documents folder shortcut (after you go and manually create a new folder shortcut to \\www.fresnounified.org\personal\student_xxxx\personal documents\ )
is that you are not able to save directly into that folder (can't drill down to save).

Student logins

On the student login page (http://www.fresnounified.org/dept/it/getinfo/Lists/StudentLogins/AllItems.aspx)

, I am noticing a few student username with weird characters.  The username should be 4 characters.  The 3rd column is the Student Login.  What is the username they are to use?

Student domain - Default save location
Is there a way to have the student accounts on the STUDENTS domain default save location be their MySite accounts.

The concern we have is that currently the default save location is the local computer's My Document.  In cases where the computers have limited hard drive space, the HD can fill up really quick and become unusable.

Staff domain - local computer rights
Issue - When staff members log into the STAFF domain on their computer, they do not have rights to certain programs(Powergrade) or to install programs, etc.

The ITS are having to go and give the user (name\STAFF)admin rights to the local computer in order to work on Powergrade.  The error they are recieving is "access denied" to the Power grade folder.  The data file resides in C:/Program file/PowerGrade/   This file is written to when they use powergrade.

Joining Staff domain script issuesUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Joining Staff domain script issues
Here are a couple of issue we have seen when running the staff script:

1.  Not all desktop icons came across.  Some of the  "system" icons such as IE, My Computer, Network Neighborhood, My Documents did not appear after running the Restore batch file.

2.  Empty folders were not copied over.

3.  When extracting the batch file, if you take the default extract settings or save it to the pre-joined domain desktop, you do not see it after you log into the domain.

4.  Test My document files size of 2gb and 4gb; all data appears to have come across.  Do we know what the limit is of the XCOPY command?
